What is a website?

A website is a collection of related digital files stored on one or more computers. Some or all of these files can be made available to people by associating the location of the index page (often called the home page) of the website with a domain name (often called a web address). Follow this link to learn more about domain names.

The publicly visible part of a website can be as simple as a single page stored on one computer, or it could consist of thousands of pages stored on many computers. The website owner can restrict access to all or part of the website (for example by letting only registered users access the site).

When you type in a web address such as google.com the browser goes to the website associated with the address and displays the home page for that address. Within the home page, there will normally be links to other pages on the site.

The pages displayed by the browser may exist on the website just as you see them on your computer (static pages) or they may be built on demand by computer programmes running on the website's computer (dynamic pages). The latter would happen on a shop website where a person might ask to see shoes. Programmes running on the site would locate all the pictures, descriptions and prices for shoes, build a page with these data and send the newly built page to the viewer's computer.

Website pages can consist of a combination of text, images, sound and movies. Web pages come complete with hidden instructions telling the browser how to display the page. To see what this page looks like in its raw state, follow this link.

While the web page tells the browser how it should look, the designer has no control over how the browser has been set up. A viewer might be using a huge font size, or a mobile phone, or a computer with a low resolution screen all of which can play havoc with the appearance of websites. Like us, most designers therefore will produce a layout that will display as required on the average person's screen.
