All about domains
In the world of the internet, a domain is the equivalent of a postal address. Just like your home or business address must be unique if people are to contact you by post or find your premises, your website must have a unique address that people can look up. This unique address is called your 'domain name' or just 'domain'.
When you want to make a website visible to the world, you need to register a domain name (don't worry - we do this on your behalf) via an authorized domain name registrar. If the name you want is already registered, you need to provide different names until you find something unique. Once you register a unique name, nobody else can use that name until your registration expires. You can register a domain for any period from one to ten years. You will always be given the option to renew your registration before your existing registration expires. In other words, once you have registered a domain, you can keep that registration for ever.
Ideally your domain name should be something related to your business. It should be reasonably short and easy for people to remember. As there are more than one billion domain names already registered, it can be a tricky process finding something that is unique, relates to your business and is memorable. We have years of experience in coming up with names that work.
Your domain is just an address and is separate from your actual website. Just like you could own a house that nobody lives in, you could own a domain that is not associated with a website. To associate your domain with a website, you need to tell the registrar where the website is located (again, we do all this for you). When somebody types your domain into a browser, the browser looks up the registrar files, finds your domain name and notes where your website is located. It then goes to the website location and displays the first page of your website (all of this happens at lightning speed). A website will normally be located on a computer provided by a hosting company. Follow this link to learn more about hosting.
Your domain name is essentially a piece of intellectual property that you own and just like any other property you own you can give it away or sell it to somebody else. The registration (and renewal fees) for new domain names are very reasonable (around 15 euros per annum including admin fee) whereas prices for existing domains can go up to hundreds of thousands. (Raised glasses to the person who registered baa.com and set up a site all about sheep. When the British Airport Authority realised the importance of an internet presence, they paid an undisclosed six-figure sum for the domain name).
